Four RB options for Cowboys who are 'not done' adding to room

The Cowboys have been arguably the least active team thus far this offseason, but head coach Mike McCarthy says more running back help is on the way.

"We're not done with that room," McCarthy told reporters at the annual league meeting on Tuesday.

Running backs Rico Dowdle, an undrafted rookie in 2020, and Deuce Vaughn, a sixth-round pick in 2023, currently highlight Dallas' running back room.

Here are four running backs the Cowboys could add to upgrade it instantly.

J.K. Dobbins, Baltimore Ravens

Dobbins suffered another season-ending injury in 2023, tearing his Achilles in Week 1. However, when healthy, the 25-year-old has proven to be electric with the ball in his hands.

In 2022, Dobbins led the league in rush yards (397) and yards per carry (7.0) from Weeks 14 to 17, according to NFL Network's Maurice Jones-Drew.

Yes, Dobbins comes at a big risk of getting injured again and leaving Dallas back at square one, but the options available on the open market aren't ideal. Dobbins may be the best of the bunch and will come at a low price after playing nine games over the past two years.

Ezekiel Elliott, New England Patriots

A reunion between the Cowboys and Elliott makes too much sense. Dallas's No. 4 overall pick in 2016 is not the player he used to be, but he proved to have some good football left in him in 2023.

Last season, Elliott rushed for 642 yards and three touchdowns and added 51 catches for 313 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

The 28-year-old could complement Dowdle or a potential rookie added in this year's draft. Seeing Elliott in a Patriots uniform didn't feel right, so why not bring him back home and let him finish his career as a Cowboy?

Kareem Hunt, Cleveland Browns

If Dallas isn't interested in a reunion with Elliott, Hunt seems like an ideal fit. The 28-year-old was a touchdown magnet in 2023, finding the endzone nine times in 15 games.

The Browns will unlikely bring him back after signing running backs D'Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines in free agency. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Hunt would help the Cowboys return to a physical run attack in his third stop since entering the league in 2017.

Jonathon Brooks, Texas Longhorns

Dallas may forego any free agent and focus solely on the 2024 NFL Draft. It's one of the less-anticipated running back classes, but there are a few good options.

Brooks seems to be the best of the bunch. The Texas product rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. As a result, he ranks as the best running back and the No. 56 overall prospect on Pro Football Focus' big board.

Some may call it fate that the Cowboys own the No. 56 pick in the second round. Brooks wouldn't have to move too far either.
